Shenton Park | Wenham Constructions BUILDERS
Designed by Hofman and Brown Architects
and built by Wenham Constructions, the brief
to alter and expand this 1900s house involved
retaining the existing character home and adding
a two-storey extension.
This historical home occupies a 460sqm block
and required the front of the existing house to be
preserved while a two-storey extension was built
on to the rear of the property.
The clients wanted to create a spacious and
contemporary family home with a pool while
maintaining the original character of the front
of the property. For this reason, the original
exterior of the house was largely untouched, with
features and characteristics of 1900s architecture
carried through the original area and a new modern
wing constructed at the rear.
This front section underwent only minor
changes to convert it into a master bedroom with
dressing room, ensuite and a sitting room/study.
Original timber floors and ceilings were
retained to ensure the style of the house was
consistent throughout the front of the home.
Walking into the extension, the ground floor
opens to a large, open-plan kitchen, dining and
living area that flows across to the outdoor and
pool area. Polished concrete floors through this
space continue all the way up to the pool’s edge,
creating a unified link between the two zones.
The glass-faced cement-render wall featured in
the kitchen subtly connects the old and new parts
of the home; an effect that is also repeated outside.
The original red-toned brickwork has also been
closely matched in the new walls around the rear
exterior of the home.
The upstairs has been designed as a family-
friendly area for the children, housing bedrooms,
a bathroom and a living/study area.
