TR MACKINNON & CO
This renovation by TR MacKinnon & Co has turned an old,
neglected beach shack into the ultimate holiday home.
When trying to decide how to update an old,
rundown beach shack, the owners of this
Dunsborough home found themselves sitting on
the roof with their architect, marvelling at the
ocean views over Geographe Bay.
At that moment, it was obvious the only
renovation option was to create a large upstairs
living area and master bedroom to capture the
expansive natural vistas.
The foundation of the existing neglected
structure was perfect for a renovation, with four
bedrooms and two bathrooms to work with once
the non-level floors and walls were corrected.
The design satisfies the spacial requirements
of the brief with six bedrooms, four bathrooms
and almost 400sqm of living space situated on
the 500sqm block.
On the ground floor, there is a games room,
kitchenette and minor bedroom wing where the
children love to escape the adults.
A new second level houses the master bedroom
and ensuite, as well as an open-plan living zone
that opens to a large deck with ocean views.
The interiors have a modern feel, with lime-
washed driftwood flooring and a light colour
palette connecting the home to its beachside
surrounds. This is further enhanced by the
cantilevered staircase, backed by a turquoise wall
that mimics the nearby ocean.
The second-storey addition has timber framing,
which leant itself to lightweight Sycon cladding
products. Axon panels envelop much of the facade,
with Matrix cladding to highlight different sections.
Galvanised steel posts and balustrading were
chosen to help bring a strong street presence and
satisfy the client’s request for a modern industrial
feel externally, while keeping the interior relaxed
This design encourages breezes to cool the
home, while natural light and ocean views can
be enjoyed from almost every room.
