Attadale | Mountford Architects ARCHITECTS
The marina is surrounded by a vibrant
village activated with ample promenades,
shops and restaurants.
Moreing Road, Attadale
With city and river views visible from this
flat 1001sqm block, there was plenty of
potential to create something extremely
special, particularly when the brief was
inspired by architectural history.
The project was born from a series of
conversations and sketches inspired by a home
commissioned in the early 1950s by the actor Gary
Cooper, and built in the Hollywood Hills by the
prolific LA architect Quincy Jones.
Ben Mountford and his team took the vision
of this famous architectural creation and melded
it with design-brief contents like four bedrooms,
three bathrooms, alfresco pool and pool house.
By reworking a mid-century design classic,
an entirely new plan was created that would
visually connect the split levels while arranging
the living zones around the courtyard.
The outcome is a home that accommodates and
contains family life within three zones: formal,
informal and alfresco.
The three zones, represented respectively by the
grand fireplace, the cantilevered mezzanine, and
the outdoor courtyard, are strongly distinguished
from each another.
This allows an already generous space to seem
even more spacious and ensures the areas are well
used. The distinctive but visually connected zones
also supply the possibility for individual activities
to be pursued without isolation from the main
activity or other family members.
The well-finished nature of these areas, the
use of stained timber detailing inside and out,
the stonework, and the deciduous plantings
all contribute to a uniquely modern home that
the owners feel has the essence of the classic,
mid-century design that inspired its creation.
