Incorporating both modern and traditional
construction materials within the one building,
architects Leonie Matthews and Paul McDonald
have created a contemporary courtyard-style
home that maximises the sweeping panoramic
views of the Swan River.
In contrast to the traditional suburban
development, the South Perth home wraps around
a courtyard that forms the main outdoor space.
The bulk of the house, particularly along the
exposed length, has been broken down into
smaller components, with different materials used
to articulate parts of the building.
Masonry walls create a podium and backbone
for the steel-and-glass boxes, and the boundary
walls define the external spaces while also
providing a backdrop to verge planting and
contributing to the appearance of the streetscape.
This home has been designed for the changing
needs of the owners, with a lift servicing the three
levels, as well as adaptable living areas allowing for
more room for an extended family, and possibly
carers if required in the future.
For the clients, the house represents their love
of the beauty of the West Australian landscape,
with its wide-open spaces, colours and strength.
