Cottesloe | Humphrey Homes ARCHITECTS
The starting points for the design of this home
were its dramatic sloping site and views to the
ocean over peppermint trees, as well as the client’s
love of the contrast between warm, natural
materials and clean, light architecture.
Meandering up to the home high on the hill,
a progression of irregular stone steps set into
the rolling front lawns leads onto cantilevering
terraces above, and allows this two-storey
building to nestle comfortably into the site.
On the first floor, the rooms focus on large
sliding glass ‘walls’ to exaggerate the views, while
simultaneously opening into the centre of the site
and warm, inviting entertaining areas protected
from the elements.
This north-facing living space is the social hub
of the home, perfectly connecting the residents to
all aspects of the site.
Dramatically scaled, four-metre-high ceilings
enhance the connection between external views
and internal courtyards.
The south side of the site has been kept private
as a ‘compartment’ for relaxed, quiet living.
A mixture of timber, stone and copper-clad
components creates an enclosure and ensures
privacy for these rooms, yet also perfectly frames
the views to the distant hills.
