While the sloping site was challenging, it
provided an opportunity for the house to be
stepped over three levels, with the undercroft
garage located at the lower level, allowing the
living areas to engage with the street.
The main living and entertainment areas,
however, are located on the first floor, and
open onto a large terrace which functions as
an outdoor living room.
Expansive glazing to the north not only
facilitates good solar design, it also provides views
of the river through the tree canopy to the west.
A central light-filled gallery space defines the
entrance while also separating the two distinct
‘private and public’ levels, otherwise connected
by the stairs.
The project is enriched by the material beauty of
travertine, recycled timbers and marble, which are
used throughout key areas and create a depth of
textural finishes that contrast with the simplicity
of the resolved modern design.
The project was built by Humphrey Homes,
who embraced the quality of workmanship and
attention to detail required.
