his modern Cottesloe home was a
collaboration with Wright Feldhusen
Architects, who were briefed to create a
‘beach house’ for a young family with two boys.
The design was based around the concept of
an adaptable single-level home that would allow
for the creation of large, free-flowing spaces
without the encumbrances of stairs. Built by
3B Build’s expert team, the house is orientated
towards the extensive grass verge of pine-tree-
lined Broome Street. These trees offer the ultimate
foreground for the house, which eases gently
into its front setback.
A strong and sculptural palette of off-form
concrete provides an anchor for the home and
accentuates the front zone of the house, acting
as a shield for the peaceful inner sanctuary of
the internal working. Privacy from the street is
also achieved by an opaque glass fence, which
encompasses the inner courtyard spaces and
doubles as pool security.
The design is formed by interlocking three
main zones. These combine to create a central
and communal family area, with the front wing
consisting of the main bedroom and study and the
back wing inclusive of a children’s play area and
bedrooms. The central zone – the hub of the home
– includes the kitchen, living and dining areas.
These have been encased by a folded roof, which
provides visual protection from the neighbours to
the south and opens up to allow northern light to
encase the spaces.
The large central living zone extends through
to an undercover terrace, garden space and pool at
the edge of the building.
