d4 Designs, his classic Claremont family
home exudes a modern elegance.
Douglas says this was a dream brief for him. A
young family’s home in beautiful leafy Claremont,
the house is on a 600sqm-plus, north-facing block
with rear laneway access. The client requested an
environmentally friendly and health-conscious yet
traditional design, with a modern interior.
d4 Designs faced a stringent Claremont council,
but thankfully the authorities saw merit in the
proposed design. The owners had a lot of input,
especially with their ‘green’ knowledge, and
awareness of orientation and light. However, the
flow of the home required some work and a little
lateral thinking before it clicked. The bulk of the
house is at the front, both to create an impressive
facade conducive to its style, and also to respect the
southern neighbours’ solar access in their outdoor
living areas. Additionally this design is more cost-
effective for construction.
Flow, orientation and separation make this
house work. The curved staircase provides the
core focus, links the upstairs and downstairs
(physically and spatially) and is a reverse ellipse,
which helps the direction people move in the
house. Finally, it subtly diverts people from the
symmetrically central front entry towards the
southern side, to enjoy the northern aspect.
The project utilises a traditional palette of stone,
neutrals and whites. Fortunately, the owners keep
an immaculate house, and so their art, furniture
and ornaments are showcased very well – there’s
a place for everything. The materials schedule
includes: Travertine from Milano Stone; benchtops
in Organic White from Caesarstone; Lime Wash
from Porters Paints, and steelwork painted in
Murabond Bridge Paint; polished plaster by David
Ridge; and air-conditioning by Intelligent Air.
Environmental choices include EO
(formaldehyde-free) cabinetry and low-VOC
paints, with non-MDF timber (to minimise glues
and formaldehyde), photovoltaic solar panels and
an underground rainwater harvesting system.
This home effortlessly combines both form
and function, and works well as a showcase of
