Home' Homes : Homes 2012 Contents Mike Edwards Design
Eye-catching and modern, a home from Mike Edwards is one
that will truly stand the test of time
ocated on a spectacularly beautiful sloping
site within the Millbrook Estate, Yallingup,
this strong and contemporary design draws
inspiration from the colours and materials of the
landscape and nearby historic buildings.
The eye-catching holiday home is adjacent
to historic Millbrook Farm and nearby Lamont’s
Restaurant & Gunyulgup Galleries. Cleverly
designed by Mike Edwards, and built by Nick
Goode Constructions, it boasts sweeping views
across a rolling rural landscape with the ocean in
the distance to the northwest. Sprinkled with grass
trees, the block has stands of remnant eucalypt
forest to the east and west, and a seasonal creek.

The owners briefed Mike for a solid and
enduring structure with a relaxed open-plan
layout, both to maximise views and provide for
simple practical utility.
Mike matched the brief by keeping the
form strong, simple and timeless. The L-shaped
layout locks in to the hillside and consists
of a sequence of logical spatial relationships.
The flowing open-plan living areas upstairs
maximise views as per the owner’s wishes, and
the clean and simple materials palette works in
synergy with the surrounding landscape. The
entertainer’s delight includes the hallmarks of
a relaxing holiday home, including a covered
outdoor kitchen and deck.
As well as being aesthetically pleasing, the design
is also functional, with rainwater harvesting from an
oversized concrete tank, hidden below the garage.
Passive solar design is shown in the fully retractable
and adjustable external venetian blinds/louvres to
the west elevation by Vental, while spotted gum
vertical weatherboard external cladding defines
the upper floor. Local materials are referenced
throughout, including the feature Yallingup Granite
external stonework and fireplace. Saltino Fossil floor
tiles were supplied by Marble & Cement Work WA.
The warm, modern and minimalist home will
stand the test of time, shying away from design
‘fads’ to allow the home to continue looking good
into the future.
