Spacious staff amenities contain all the
functional aspects and aesthetics of a city cafe.
With its newly upgraded exterior form
and landscaped gardens, the renovation
of this 1990s cottage makes a positive
contribution to the streetscape of its upmarket
Spending most of his time at his winery
in Margaret River or at various surf hotspots
around the world, this client’s enviable
lifestyle is reflected in the project with a
casual, contemporary, beachside feel that
is low-maintenance. Resort-style luxuries
include a plunge pool, onsen spa, outdoor
entertainment areas, surround-sound and a
beer/wine centre in the kitchen.
Creating a modern reinvention of the front
facade, Craig Steere Architects moved the character-
style verandah and concealed the hipped roof forms
beyond with a strong inverted frame.
Internal walls were cut back and room
layouts reconfigured to increase the sense of
space and maximise floor area, with a focus on
the exterior courtyard and the natural lighting
and ventilation it provides.
The main suite features a separate dressing room
and a large ensuite, made even more luxurious with
the inclusion of the onsen spa set flush with the
adjoining outdoor plunge pool.
High-quality fittings and finishes include
teak decking, natural stone, French Oak flooring,
low-VOC paint and oil finishes, energy-efficient
appliances and Low E thermal glazing.
The completed project represents the
transformation of a character-style cottage
into a luxurious weekender, to suit a jetsetting client
who has restricted time and a cost-conscious budget.
