spiral ductwork and circular spun air diffusers
further celebrate the commercial scale, and lend
an industrial rawness to the interior.
Monolithic, black slate ‘fire-walls’ anchor to the
ground, and reference the carbon and soot of the
fires they house. A face concrete blockwork base
sets out a more rational and Cartesian counterpoint
to the expressive cantilevered forms over, and house
the extroverted communal spaces that look across
the garden and swimming pool towards the river.
These spaces include the main open-plan areas,
guest suite, gymnasium, sauna and laundry.
Integrated services include CBUS controls and
LED light sources, a photovoltaic array, in-slab
hydronic heating, solar pool heating and hot water
systems, and underground rainwater harvesting to
the toilets, laundry and garage, for washing cars.
High levels of ceiling insulation, along with
thermally broken double-glazed frames further
help to minimise ongoing energy consumption.
Viewed from the riverfront parkland, the house
presents as a large-scale sculpture on a limestone
plinth, giving back to the community through its
generosity of form and material.
