The external area of this Northbridge home
was designed to maximise the benefits of
Perth’s contemporary inner-city living
and an intimate, relaxed lifestyle.
The compact yet versatile space was designed
by Blake Willis Landscape Architects and built
by E-scapes Landscape Construction.
Blake’s clients wanted an area allowing them
to engage with their community and interact
with the goings-on around them.
This desire for a connection with the
surrounding environment needed to be
balanced by appropriate security.
Perceived privacy is achieved with careful
height relationships between bench, planters
and planting, with subtle lighting, all of which
limits visual penetration into the space in the
evening, but allows filtered views outward.
The existing street-facing wall was
removed, while stone work and added blade
walls were the main facade treatment for the
introduction of stacking cafe doors that open
onto a timber landing.
Planting structure is turned on its head
by integrating plants that have uses beyond
the aesthetic. Traditional herbs and leaf crops
form a textural planting.
The fusion of function and form creates
a practical yet attractive space that is perfect
for sophisticated, yet low-maintenance,
