Simplicity of design, smart use of proportion and
a natural palette of materials were the keys to
creating this elegant home.
Designed by Mick Rule for a large family of keen
entertainers, it has a U-shaped plan that wraps
arou nd an alfresco area, 12m lap pool and courtyard.
It also contains private guest quarters and a 20-seat
dining room for more formal occasions.
The elevated site has front northern exposure,
maximised by use of a side lane for car access and
side garage. This softens the feel of the front of the
home and allows for extensive glazing to make the
most of winter sun, and also, a front courtyard.
The front door is on the side and upon entering,
a sight line to the alfresco area and pool offers
light access and visual stimulation.
The children have their own wing, with
television room and homework area linked to
double-size bedrooms, where they can enjoy a
taste of independence in their own space.
Meanwhile, the parents can enjoy a tranquil
break from family life in their own luxurious
quarters – a bedroom with views of the Cottesloe
pines, ensuite and balcony.
Set in such a beautiful suburb, indoor/outdoor
living was important and was achieved by opening
the simple elongated indoor living area on two sides.
