When an architectural firm is based in
Western Australia’s beautiful South
West, you would expect nothing less
than a creative, unique approach to integrating
the environment into their practice.
This is exactly the case for Kent Lyon Architect,
a company founded in Bunbury in 1996 that has
developed a strong reputation for demonstrating
diversity and innovation in its architecture,
interior design and heritage services.
Kent Lyon has responded to both local and global
environmental issues by embracing and integrating
into designs energy-efficient features such as
orientation, ventilation, rainwater use, solar hot
water use and photovoltaic technology.
The owners of this 450sqm site wanted a two-storey
family home with plenty of communal living space
as well as private areas in which to retreat.
Kent Lyon, assisted by Mark Webster, provided
four bedrooms, an upstairs activity area, a study
with street access, lounge, dining room, cellar,
outdoor area, a workshop and storage areas.
The indoor lounge and outdoor courtyard
merge into one living area with the use of
wide-opening transparent doors.
The orientation of the house maximises
thermal mass, natural heating in winter and
cooling in summer and natural lighting. Every
room has at least two sides with openings
to allow for cross-flow ventilation.
It was important to maximise space without
making the home feel cluttered. As half of the
already narrow frontage was taken up by a double
garage, use of horizontal and vertical elements
such as feature walls, cedar gable and balconies
was designed to enhance the street presence.
Glass blocks in the kitchen provide filtered
light yet protect privacy.
Suspended lighting, cedar siding, timber
veneer panelling and solid timber stair treads
and handrails add a rich texture to this timeless
home where the coast meets the city.
The home was built by Smith Constructions
and is a fine example of Kent Lyon Architect’s
fresh, sustainable approach to design that
responds to the client’s needs, the environment
and the community.
