Harness the sun’s rays to generate clean electricity
with a photovoltaic (PV) system. This reduces the
amount of electricity you draw from the grid and
if you make more than you need, the excess is fed
back and you’re credited (feed-in tariff). Another
benefit is the Renewable Energy Buyback Scheme,
a price paid by the electricity company for exported
energy. Bear in mind that federal government
upfront rebates and state government feed-in
tariffs have been cut (July 2011). The average
discount for a 1.5kW system in Perth has dropped
from a range of $4960 to $6200 to a range of
$1860 to $3720, and the tariff has halved (from
40 cents per kW hour to 20 cents).
A 1.5kW system costs about $9000 before
rebates. Installation costs vary. In Perth, a
1.5kW to 3kW system could provide 40 to 70 per
cent of total energy use for a typical household
using 18 kWh per day.
The system should pay for itself in about nine
years (compared with three on the previous
rebate and tariff systems). Plus, PV systems are
now pushing up the resale value of properties.
A new Pioneer International ducted split-system
air-conditioner can actually generate some of
the electricity needed to run it, reducing bills.
Waste energy is recovered from the superheated
refrigerant through a turbine and harmonic
expansion chamber. The waste energy plus
energy provided by sound waves spins a turbine
assisted by the low viscosity of the superheated
refrigerant. This process drives a small generator.
It’s best used in conjunction with a PV system.
The power that’s recovered from waste energy is
fed back into the system. It’s available through
Air Force Air Conditioning.
