STONEWORK DESIGNER AND
BUILDER: J Flanders Stonemasonry
True masonry is a skill possessed by artisans --
a finicky process where each piece of stone is
selected individually and assessed, and the walls
come together, piece-by-piece, to create a work of art.
Jim Flanders is one such artisan stonemason,
dedicated to providing clients with design ideas that
both overcome site restrictions and exude individuality.
As a Master Builders Association award winner, Jim
designs, builds and supplies for a variety of di erent stone
projects. His work also involves restoration and he sources
most of his material from overseas.
With homeowners, builders and architects constantly
looking for something unique and original, Jim puts
in considerable groundwork to produce panels of the
stone look he has in mind. He then gauges the client's
response and after some trial and error, the final stone
type and design is decided upon.
With over 30 years' experience, Jim was taught
by the best and was trained in the UK where
stonemasonry is a traditional trade. He travelled to
Europe, the USA and Canada with his work before
settling in Perth where he has been for the past 15 years.
Jim works with a variety of materials, using everything
from limestone and sandstone to the hardest taskmaster of
all, granite. His experience allows him to make the process
easier for homeowners, builders and architects alike.
One of his biggest projects was for Perth architect
Ed Eames -- a house inspired by the style of Frank Lloyd
Wright. Says Ed: "Jim is a true artisan. His workmanship is
just fantastic. When he worked on our house he travelled
to the quarry to hand-select every stone to create the
right e ect."
