What is your ultimate living room style
We're not into "style" per se, rather the "feel" of a living
room space, regardless of style, should embrace you
whether you are by yourself or with family and friends.
A living room should connect to life, whether by
means of an extended view into a garden courtyard
or a simple focus on the warmth and light of a fireplace,
yet be seated enough so as not to feel unsettled.
The living room should be like a quiet canvas to which
you can add furnishings, objects and artworks from your
What is the most important design aspect
to get right in the living room?
Balancing practical elements such as flows in and out,
natural light quality, airflow, furniture placement, can be
the simplest challenge so as to maintain intimacy or allow
for entertaining of family and friends.
You need to be able to have that couch snooze on
a warm afternoon with the gentle breeze blowing,
whilst the game of chess is happening at the co ee
table. I always think "less-is-more" in a space like this...
definitely no clutter!
Cost aside, what is the dream feature
of the ultimate living room?
These days the living room needs to be one of the most
flexible spaces in the house. It should be a space that can
achieve a seamless transition between inside and outside
if required, one that can open up to outdoor areas or a
space that can be made more intimate filled with warmth
Televisions that can disappear, eco-fireplaces that can
be re-positioned or ottomans that can be re-arranged
to suit the occasion are contemporary elements that can
really be worked to achieve a quietly sophisticated room
whilst maintaining all the mood options.
What materials do you recommend using
when creating/designing this look?
The living room needs to be "structurally" positioned well
in a house for a start, allowing sunlight to filter through for
natural illumination and warmth. We recommend working
with various layers of natural material, whether it's stone,
timber or plain carpet. This base palette should be neutral
so the flavour or style can be layered on top. Floor rugs,
soft furnishings, lamps, window treatments all interplay on
top and can be changed as your life changes.
How can people incorporate this style of
living room without a total renovation? What
are simple ways to create your chosen style?
Simplify, de-clutter and open up the space! Again -- less
is more. Let the light and air in, as this is a real challenge
involving a shift in the state of mind that is more di cult
to achieve than moving walls around.
The real barriers (in life) are the limitations you place
