What is your ultimate bedroom style and why?
My ultimate bedroom style is a boudoir feel. I love the
look and feel of rich and luxury items but finished with
a sophisticated and elegant appearance. I also love
fabrics, so I would definitely have drapery and custom-
made bedding and bedhead.
What is the most important design aspect
to get right in the bedroom?
Having good blockout from the morning sunlight is most
important. The best option in this case is to have full
blockout drapery. During the day it's best to have either
a sheer roller blind or a sheer drapery to reduce glare
from entering the room. Drapery also softens the room
compared to blinds only.
Another important aspect is to have less clutter in
the bedroom. If the bedroom area is quite small then
incorporate a few mirrored items such as mirrored cube
side tables. Having a mirror hung on the wall will also
create an illusion of more space.
Lighting is another important aspect to think about
and my preference is for soft mood lighting. A good
option is to have a dimmer on light switches and use
Cost aside, what is the dream feature of the
To have an LCD screen built in at the foot of the
bedhead so when you want to watch television the
LCD will automatically pop out!
When you have finished watching, the LCD automatically
retreats into the bedhead and is hidden away.
What materials do you recommend using
when creating/designing this look?
Lush fabrics such as silks, ta eta and soft linen sheers.
Mix and match fabrics when designing bedding such as
incorporating silk and velvets. I'd choose solid linen fabrics
for the bedhead and use another source of fabric or detail
(such as gold press buttons) for a feature on the bedhead.
Always use a valance on a bed to disguise the bed castors.
If you aren't keen on valances make sure that the style is a
plain tailored one. Use a variety of di erent shapes, sizes,
colours and various fabrics for decorative cushions.
How can people incorporate this style of
bedroom without a total renovation? What
are simple ways to create your chosen style?
Purchase table lamps and side tables from large retails
stores such as Beacon or Freedom that are low on price.
Instead of having a blockout curtain and a sheer curtain,
use either one type as a roller blind (either blockout or
sheer) and then reverse for the other such as either a
sheer curtain or a blockout curtain. Having the option to
have a sheer curtain and a blockout curtain can be more
expensive rather than having one as a blind and the other
treatment to soften the room.
Buy ready-made cushions rather than having them made.
By changing your cushions you can slightly change the
character of your room appearance. Use artwork -- you can
simply paint a plain canvas just with some solid bold colours
and hang it up! Or develop some nice family portraits and
frame them in simple either black or white frames.
