Our West Australian climate and diverse landscape points
the way for the state's own unique style of architecture, says
designer Chris Maher of Mirvac Design.
"We have designed a series of homes in Seascapes that
draw on and maximise their absolute beachfront position,
with an open, breezy coastal feel," he says.
"In contrast, The Peninsula in Burswood exudes
cosmopolitan style with a mix of high and mid-rise apartment
towers and terrace homes featuring views of the city skyline,
golf course and river with proximity to a whole range of inner-
city facilities and amenities. It is crucial each and every home
and apartment we design suits its individual environment -- in
terms of aesthetics, functionality and location."
Master-planned communities are also proving
increasingly popular with buyers in Western Australia and
around the country. "We have noticed people are trending
towards buying in master-planned communities, because
they can clearly see what is planned for the development,
and they love the convenience of having facilities like
restaurants, cafes and shops at their doorstep," he says.
"The place, the community and the amenity are equally
as important as the apartment or house design."
Any design aficionado worth their pacer pencil will name the
Netherlands as a source of as some of the most forward thinking,
outstanding designers worldwide.
Known for their ability to balance pragmatism and simplicity with
"out-of-the-box" thoughts and dashes of humour and irony, Dutch
design is second to none. If you're an afore-mentioned aficionado, or
just a keen observer, you might be interested in Dutch Design Week.
To be held in design hub Eindhoven from October 17 to
October 25, the week will attract tens of thousands of people.
Designers from various disciplines covering everything from
industrial design to applied arts put their work on view in more
than 40 venues across the city.
Dutch Design Week 2009 will focus on the role of technology
in design, and examining the important role technology plays in all
aspects of our life; and how design can help bridge the important
gap between technology and humans via aesthetics.
The highlight of the eight-day event is the Eindhoven Design
Academy show, the academy's graduate exhibition, which is highly
anticipated by the design community.
The week o ers a combination of graduates, high profile
designers and talented newcomers, and is great networking for
companies, designers and public. And while you might have to
shell out a little to get to Eindhoven, all exhibitions are free unless
otherwise stated. www.dutchdesignweek.nl
