Building this two-storey home at the rear of
a sub-divided block was not without its obstacles,
such as a sloping block with limited access and the
need to retain the fragile original house.
The clients’ brief required an open-plan
living area upstairs – containing the kitchen,
dining and living room – that leads out to the
spacious balcony through sliding stacker doors,
boasting fantastic views to the hills and city. The
evening breeze is welcomed through the main
living area, cooling the entire upper level of the
home during the summer months.
With three double-sized, high-ceiling
bedrooms located on the lower level, this ‘upside-
down’ style of floorplan bucks tradition while
maximising space on the small 321sqm lot.
Fittings and finishes have not been forgotten,
with an art deco pattern adorning the home’s
doors, and imported Italian tiles at ground level.
Upstairs, the balcony extends across the width
of the house and becomes an extension of the
master bedroom suite. This is a massive room with
an impressive walk-in robe and ensuite, fitted
with a window beside the bath to admire the view
while enjoying a soak.
